There seems to be no aspect of our lives that the Biden Administration and its liberal allies will not try to control, change, or ban. Earlier in the year, Biden announced that he would ban the lightbulb. Then his regulators decided to go after washing machines. And, of course, we all know about their obsession with gas stoves.
But now, they are going after a childhood favorite: chocolate milk.
The Washington Examiner reports, “A proposal from the Department of Agriculture would overhaul school meal standards and includes indications that the department is considering restrictions on the ability of school cafeterias to serve flavored milk, including chocolate milk.
The proposal centers on concerns about added sugars in school meals. In its proposal, the USDA noted that some of the groups the department had consulted in drafting the rule were “concerned about added sugars in a variety of foods commonly offered at breakfast, including flavored milks, sweetened cereals, muffins, and condiments and toppings.”
The proposed restriction mainly affects students in elementary grades. The USDA said in its proposed rule that it would allow the serving of flavored milk “as a competitive food in high schools.”
Chocolate milk has been a recent topic of conversation among parents, dieticians, and school-meal officials, among many others who see the great tradition of chocolate milk in schools as both a threat to child health and weight but also as a vehicle to get proper nutrients to kids.
“Supporters of restricting flavored milk say it has added sugars that contribute to childhood obesity and establish preferences for overly sweet drinks. But opponents, including the dairy industry and many school districts, say removing it will lead to children drinking less milk, wrote The Wall Street Journal.
“We want to take a product that most kids like and that has nine essential nutrients in it and say, ‘You can’t drink this, you have to drink plain’? asked Katie Wilson, executive director of the Urban School Food Alliance, which represents 18 of the largest school districts in the country. ‘What are we trying to prove?’
Others worry that children already have too much sugar in their diets, contributing to rising levels of childhood obesity. Flavored skim milk was the top source of added sugars at both school breakfasts and school lunches, according to a 2021 study.
‘From a public-health perspective, it makes a lot of sense to try to limit the servings of these flavored milks because they do have quite a lot of added sugar,’ said Erica Lauren Kenney, a public-health and nutrition professor at the Harvard T. H. Chan School of Public Health.”
As Washington Free Beacon Opinion Columnist Andrew Stiles noted, Democrats often claim that children should be allowed to do whatever they want with their bodies.
The Free Beacon also pointed out that “the administration’s commitment to good meals for kids only extends so far. The Agriculture Department announced last year that it will exclude low-income students from the National School Lunch Program if the students’ public school doesn’t comply with the administration’s LGBT policies.
Left-wing officials, meanwhile, have long tried to regulate foods that Americans eat. Former New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg, who ran for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination, attempted to ban both adults and children from buying large sugary drinks. New York State’s highest court overturned the ban in 2014.”
Maybe Joe Biden agrees with Michelle Obama that little kids are “terrorists.” Either way, this move, like the former First Lady’s school lunches, will likely go down as a hated government overreach by an entire generation.
