In 2015, Donald Trump famously declared the he would build a wall on the Mexican border and “make Mexico pay for it.” Eight years later, after losing the 2020 election to Joe Biden, the former president’s wall is now being sold for scrap worth up to $15 billion.
One of the first moves Joe Biden made upon being inaugurated president was to halt much of the construction of the border wall, leaving roughly 250 miles along the border unfinished.
The Daily Upside reports that “The DOD’s combat support branch, the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA), confirmed to Power Corridor late Thursday that the Pentagon is now moving ahead with the sale of the leftover materials, many of which have been sitting for years in piles on government and private land out West.
The items up for auction this week are ‘excess border wall materials that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers turned over to the DLA for disposition and are now for sale,’ a DLA spokesperson said.
the auctioneer has been careful not to describe the items as parts of Trump’s discarded wall, instead, generically listing them online as “steel tubing and sticks for industrial construction.”
A source close to the fire sale told Power Corridor that this is by design. Under specific terms of the liquidation, Gov Planet was instructed by the Pentagon to aggressively market and auction off approximately 12,000 border wall items, but not to mention Trump, Mexico, or the controversial border wall. ‘We are legally not allowed to mention these are the border wall materials, or we could lose our jobs,’ the source said, on condition of anonymity. ‘But that’s what they are – 110 percent.’
Why would the government want to keep the border wall liquidation under wraps? ‘With all the news about Trump right now, I don’t think they want to cause any more chaos,’ the source says. ‘But this is a huge deal and with everything that’s going on with Trump, it’s amazing to me that here’s the wall, being sold behind Americans’ backs.’”
The only ones who seem to be happy at Biden’s dismantling of the border wall are the Mexican drug cartels. Last week a large cache of military-style weapons and armor-piercing munitions was discovered by Texas authorities.
Locals who have to live on the border have been begging the White House to maintain the wall and close the gaps, which have been allowing thousands of migrants into their land for years, causing a state of emergency in some border towns.
It’s upsetting for Yuma County Supervisor Jonathan Lines, who has been waiting for the Biden administration to fill in major gaps in Arizona’s border wall. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced more than one year ago that they will close the gaps at Yuma’s Morelos Dam, which is one of the largest entry points for illegal immigrants, noted The Daily Caller News Foundation.
The wall closing off the gaps at the dam is still under construction, Lines told the DCNF.
“Everything to complete the wall was already in place on the ground and purchased and now they have gone out and redesigned the enclosures for the gaps. This is an example of government waste at its finest,” Lines told the DCNF.
“They have been using a different product, but our panels in Yuma that are complete are still there,” Lines said, referring to the ongoing construction to fill the border wall gaps in the area.
Arizona, where much of the border wall is being scrapped by the Biden Administration, has seen a massive spike in illegal immigration over the past month.
According to ABC News, “Border Patrol agents recorded 132,652 apprehensions of migrants who entered the U.S. unlawfully in between ports of entry in July, compared to nearly 100,000 such apprehensions in June. Moreover, U.S. immigration authorities processed 50,851 migrants at legal ports of entry, a record high, mostly under a system that allows asylum-seekers in Mexico to use a phone app to request appointments to enter the U.S.
The sharpest increase in unlawful crossings occurred in Border Patrol’s Tucson sector, a sprawling and remote region that covers most of Arizona’s border with Mexico and parts of the Sonoran Desert, where temperatures have reached 110 degrees every day this summer. Border Patrol recorded nearly 40,000 apprehensions there in July, a record for the sector.
Border Patrol apprehensions rose across several demographics last month, especially among families traveling with children, a population that poses significant operational challenges for U.S. officials due to legal limits on the detention of minors. Border Patrol agents processed more than 60,000 migrant parents and children traveling as families in between ports of entry last month, nearly doubling June’s tally.
Apprehensions of single adult migrants stood at just over 62,000 in July, virtually the same level as June. Border Patrol also processed more than 10,000 unaccompanied children, nearly a 50% jump from June.”
Things have gotten bad enough on the border that the current second place contender for the Democratic nomination has called out Biden’s lack of policy to fix the problem.
The administration has also faced heavy criticism from Republicans for its management of the crisis occurring on the border, with many blaming its decision to roll back certain border security measures implemented during the Trump era for the ongoing surge in migrants attempting to enter the United States.
In preparation for the 2024 election, a number of Republican candidates have come out in support of stricter policies, such as resuming wall construction, reinstating the Migrant Protection Protocols, and increasing measures to combat human smuggling.
In response, many liberal outlets have labeled the acknowledgement that lax border policies lead to more human trafficking to be a conspiracy theory. The recent movie “Sound of Freedom,” for example, received the ire from liberal critics for its portrayal of child trafficking occurring in Central and South America.
It all leaves one question: is the White House auctioning off pieces of the border just to spite Trump?
