By A major Trump critic and the ultimate political “nepo baby,” Liz Cheney is again making the rounds pretending that she is very popular with people outside of the Washington Beltway.
It’s a pretty lucrative way to make a living.
Recently, Dick Cheney’s daughter has gone on television to hock her book and do what she does best, tell liberal journalists what they want to hear. This time, repeating the idea that was first pitched in 2016: If Donald Trump becomes president, the United States will fall into totalitarianism or something.
The Washington Post reported that while promoting her new book “Oath and Honor: A Memoir and a Warning,” the former Wyoming congresswoman — who was defeated by a Trump loyalist last year — is warning that Trump could transform America’s democracy into a dictatorship if he is reelected; anticipating, she said, that he would attempt to stay longer than his term.
“Several years ago, I would not have contemplated a third-party run,” Cheney said in a Monday interview with The Washington Post. But, she said, “I happen to think democracy is at risk at home, obviously, as a result of Donald Trump’s continued grip on the Republican Party, and I think democracy is at risk internationally as well.”
Given her appeal to independents, former Republicans and some Democrats, many Trump critics in both parties have noted that a presidential run by Cheney could undercut her stated goal of defeating Trump, because it could draw some votes away from President Biden. Cheney said those considerations would all be part of her analysis, and underscored that she would not do anything that would help Trump return to the White House.
The former congresswoman would face a daunting task if she decides to run — and not just because of the deep antipathy toward her that Trump fostered among many Republicans as he urged them to cast her from office. To run for president outside the two-party system in America, candidates must either attach themselves to third parties that have ballot access or petition for their own place on state ballots, which can be a costly and cumbersome process. In order for a candidate to participate in the debates organized by The Commission on Presidential Debates next fall, they must have at least 15 percent support in national polls and are required to meet other criteria.
Cheney claims to be a principled conservative, but in reality, she knows that her wealth creation options all revolve around being a Republican who hates Republicans, much like her former January 6 Committee partner, Adam Kinzinger.
Earlier in the week, she outed herself as not concerned only with Trump’s “threat to democracy,” but with conservatism and Republicans generally, which is to say that she’s merely a Democrat wearing GOP clothing.
The Hill wrote, “former Rep. Liz Cheney (Wyo.), once a top-ranking Republican in the House, warned over the weekend that a GOP majority in 2025 “presents a threat” to the United States.
“I believe very strongly in those principles and ideals that have defined the Republican Party, but the Republican Party of today has made a choice, and they haven’t chosen the Constitution. And so I do think it presents a threat if the Republicans are in the majority in January 2025,’ Cheney told CBS News’s John Dickerson in an interview that aired on ‘CBS Sunday Morning.’
Dickerson asked what would happen if Johnson was the Speaker in January 2025, when Congress is slated to certify the 2024 presidential election.
‘He can’t be,’ she said. ‘We’re facing a situation with respect to the 2024 election where it’s an existential crisis, and we have to ensure that we don’t have a situation where an election that might be thrown into the House of Representatives is overseen by a Republican majority.’
She also warned that the United States is ‘sleepwalking into dictatorship’ if Trump is reelected.”
Cheney has never really been able to explain what this “dictatorship” would look like.

Does she argue Trump will send federal SWAT units to arrest activists opposed to his “culture war” policies?

She’s never even been willing to say that she thinks the president of the United States might use his office to peddle influence and potentially launder money through family members.

While not having a lot of answers, Liz Cheney does have a lot of hubris. In her concession speech after losing the Republican primary for her congressional seat in 2022, she likened herself to Abraham Lincoln, who also experienced defeat before becoming president.
In that regard, she’s a perfect third party candidate, someone no one is asking to run or anyone wants to vote for, but can fill a 15 minute segment attacking conservatives.
