By Earlier in the week, reports showed that the White House no longer believes that the crisis occurring every day at the southern border requires any action.
New Conservative Post wrote that Biden “no longer feels a ‘sense of urgency’ despite the Custom and Border Patrol announcing that it had just under 190,000 total encounters along the southwest border in February 2024, the shortest month the year.”
Rather than work to secure the border, something the public has routinely listed as its top priority, the White House has allegedly become more focused on ways to issue the largest amnesty executive order in history.
President Joe Biden is currently considering granting amnesty to illegal migrants in a bid to act on the worsening immigration crisis, writes The Daily Caller.
The plan would grant migrants who have been in the country for more than 10 years access to the cancellation of removal program provided that they have relatives who would suffer if they were deported, according to Politico. Migrants could then receive a green card — a permanent residency grant — if they meet the cancellation of removal requirements and an immigration judge rules in their favor.
It would represent a larger effort by Biden to take action on behalf of illegal immigrants who have long stayed inside the U.S., the three officials told Politico. The Obama administration took similar action in 2012 with the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, which delayed the deportation of illegal migrants who came to the U.S. when they were minors.
One idea the administration has mused is increasing support to states and cities that have taken in a high number of illegal immigrants, such as Denver, Colorado and New York City, according to Politico. Biden also previously considered using executive authority to make it harder to claim asylum at the southern border by raising the standards for a migrant to claim “credible fear” of being deported to their home country.
The move shouldn’t be a surprise. Democrats have spent the last few years looking for ways to legalize undocumented immigrants and pushed for ways to put them on voter rolls.
Politico noted that “the New York City Council filed a notice of appeal Monday to the state’s highest court in support of a 2022 law it passed granting municipal voting privileges to non-citizens with green cards or work authorizations.
“Empowering New Yorkers to participate in our local democratic process can only strengthen New York City by increasing civic engagement,” council spokesperson Rendy Desamours said in a statement, adding that the legislative body finds the law consistent with the state constitution, election law and municipal home rule.
The legislation was ruled unconstitutional one month ago by the Appellate Division for the Second Judicial Department in New York.
It had sought to allow an estimated 800,000 eligible non-citizens to cast ballots in city elections including those for mayor and City Council. But Local Law 11 of 2022 had been challenged by a coalition of right-leaning elected officials, including Staten Island Republicans Vito Fossella, Joe Borelli and Nicole Malliotakis. They argue the right to vote is sacred to U.S. citizens and the legislation is unconstitutional.”
Despite claiming that his city could no longer take more illegal immigrants because his city “is full,” New York City Mayor Eric Adams has defended the law.
This is not the first time this year that Democrats have looked to allow non-citizens to participate in elections. In February, New Conservative Post reported that liberal leaders in the swing state of Arizona had begun pushing for non-citizens voting in that state’s elections, a move that could decide the presidential election this November.
