During an episode of HBO’s “Real Time with Bill Maher” Andrew Cuomo came to Donald Trump’s defense, saying that the New York District Attorney should never brought that case against the former president because it reeks of politicization.

Cuomo’s went after the case, which resulted in Trump’s conviction on 34 counts, by arguing that a large swath of people in the Empire State don’t view it as a fair case.

“The trials in New York, New Yorkers said – 66% said the justice system is politicized. And there’s nobody in New York who likes Trump,” he said. “And still, 66% said the justice system is politicized. That’s why I think he’s not paying the same price for these verdicts because they believe it is political.”

The former New York governor leaned into his own experience at the highest levels of Empire State power to defend Trump and go after the high ly biased Attorney General Letitia James and her lackey in Manhattan, Alvin Bragg, writes The Daily Caller.

“The Attorney General’s case in New York, frankly, should have never been brought and if his name was not Donald Trump, and he if he wasn’t running for president, I’m the former AG in New York, I’m telling you that case would have never been brought, and that’s what is offensive to people,” Cuomo said during a discussion with Maher and former Republican Rep. Adam Kinzinger of Illinois in “Real Time With Bill Maher: Overtime.”

James promised to investigate Trump during her 2018 campaign for the office, during which she labeled him an “illegitimate president.” She sued Trump in September 2022, alleging he overstated the value of real estate holdings in order to obtain loans.

Prior to Cuomo’s comments on the civil fraud case, Maher criticized Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg over the indictment of Trump on 34 counts of falsification of business records. Trump was convicted on all counts May 30.

“I was always with you on the one in New York, the hush money trial,” Maher told Cuomo. “I don’t think they should have brought that one. It was just always going to look like a sex case and people were always just going to look at it that way.”

The former New York governor stated that public trust in institutions erodes when politics interferes. He also pointed to the hypocrisy of liberals claiming to be defending democracy while working overtime to jail the opposition’s leader.

“You want to talk about a threat to democracy: when you have this country believing you’re playing politics with the justice system and you’re trying to put people in jail or convict them for political reasons, then we have a real problem.”

The New York Post noted that “Cuomo stepped down on August 10, 2021, three weeks after an investigation by New York Attorney General Letitia James found he had sexually harassed or mistreated 11 women during his time in office.

He has consistently denied the allegations.

Since leaving office, the former governor has reportedly been eyeing a political comeback, with insiders telling The Post recently that he may challenge Eric Adams for New York City mayor in 2025.”
