Manhattan DA Tries To Keep Trump Gagged

Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg once again reminded the world that the entire point of his charges against former President Donald Trump has little to do with justice.

It’s all about hurting Trump’s campaign against Joe Biden and keeping him from defending himself in public.

That’s why on Wednesday, despite his trial being over, the Democrat demanded that the gag order against Donald Trump continue through sentencing in July.

Bragg doesn’t want the former president to be able to defend himself against Joe Biden calling him “a felon” during the debate on CNN at the end of the month, writes The Daily Caller.

Trump attorney’s asked Judge Juan Merchan on Tuesday to lift the order, writing in a letter that the “concerns articulated by the government and the Court do not justify restrictions on the First Amendment rights of President Trump” now that the trial has concluded. Prosecutors disagreed, responding that the order was intended to protect more than just the trial proceedings.

“As the People will explain more fully in our written opposition to defendant’s forthcoming motion, these interests have not abated, and the Court has an obligation to protect the integrity of these proceedings and the fair administration of justice at least through the sentencing hearing and the resolution of any post-trial motion,” prosecutor Matthew Colangelo, who formerly was a top official in the Biden’s Department of Justice (DOJ), wrote in the letter to Merchan.

Trump’s attorneys argued Tuesday that Trump needs to have “unrestrained campaign advocacy” in light of Biden’s comments about the trial verdict and decision to hold a campaign event outside of the courthouse, along with continued attacks on Trump levied by witnesses like Stormy Daniels and Michael Cohen.

They also noted the upcoming presidential debate scheduled for June 27.

The briefing schedule prosecutors proposed to consider lifting the order, which follows the schedule for other post-trial motions, would likely ensure the order stays in place during the debate if it is adopted. Prosecutors asked for a June 13 deadline for the defense’s motion and a June 27 deadline for the prosecution’s final response.

Democrats have come to see the sham trial in which most liberals cannot tell you what crime the former president actually committed as their best chance to save Biden. The incumbent has become one of the least liked presidents in modern history.

CNN reported that “President Joe Biden rebuked former President Donald Trump as a “convicted felon” on Monday, telling donors his predecessor “snapped” after losing the 2020 presidential election and would be worse if he won in November.

‘For the first time in American history a former president that is a convicted felon is now seeking the office of the presidency,’ Biden said at a fundraiser in Greenwich, Connecticut, according to the pool reporter inside the fundraiser.

‘But as disturbing as that is, more damaging is the all-out assault Donald Trump is making on the American system of justice,’ he continued, going on to call Trump ‘unhinged.’”

It’s clear that Biden only cares about the “the American system of justice” when it can be used to help him hold on to power.

Weeks before Trump’s verdict, Biden took the stage at a campaign rally and patted himself on the back for ignoring a Supreme Court ruling.

The Wall Street Journal wrote, “American Presidents may not like Supreme Court decisions, but most since Andrew Jackson haven’t bragged about defying its rulings. Not even Donald Trump. Then there’s President Biden, who, while canceling more student debt this week, boasted about ignoring the Supreme Court’s landmark 2023 ruling that his previous loan forgiveness plan was illegal.

Speaking in Culver City, Calif., on Wednesday, Mr. Biden said his original plan to “provide millions of working families with debt relief for their college student debt” was derailed by “MAGA Republicans” and “special interests” who challenged the plan in court. “The Supreme Court blocked it,” Mr. Biden added, “but that didn’t stop me.” He apparently thinks defying the law is a virtue.

On Wednesday Mr. Biden wrote off another $1.2 billion in student-loan debt, bringing the total amount he has canceled to some $138 billion. That’s not as much as the $400 billion debt cancellation a 6-3 Supreme Court majority struck down last summer, but it’s still a handout to 3.9 million borrowers.

He’s not really canceling anything because he’s transferring the debt from the borrowers it benefited to the taxpayers who will finance it with higher taxes or interest payments on the rising national debt.”

Biden doesn’t see the American system of justice as something worth defending. He sees it as an obstacle to power and weapon against his political opponents.
