Bernie Sanders may have accidentally let the cat out of the bag on Kamala Harris during an interview on “Meet the Press.”
The leftwing senator from Vermont was asked if he had any concerns about Kamala Harris “abandoning” her leftist policies that she laid out in 2020, such as a ban on fracking or eliminating private healthcare.
No, Bernie replied, “she’s just trying to pragmatic” in order to win the White House.
In other words, she’s lying to the public to gain power, writes The Daily Caller.
Since becoming the Democratic presidential nominee, Harris has faced backlash from Republicans for flip-flopping on far-left policies like banning fracking, which she once advocated for. On “Meet the Press,” host Kristen Welker pressed Sanders on Harris’ recent policy reversals, asking if he believes she is leaving “her progressive ideals” behind.
“No, I don’t think she’s abandoning her ideals. I think she’s trying to be pragmatic and doing what she thinks is right in order to win the election. My own view is slightly different. I think that in America today there are a lot of people, rural people, working-class people who no longer believe that the United States, Congress and government represents their interests who are dominated by big-money interests,” Sanders said.
“So I think that there is something wrong personally when we are the only major country on earth not to guarantee health care to all of our people despite spending twice as much per capita,” Sanders continued. “That is why I support Medicare for all. She does not. She has another approach toward moving to universal health care.”
Sanders noted that if Harris continues campaigning on issues like “raising taxes on billionaires” and increasing “the minimum wage from a starvation” level, she could “win big.” However, Welker pressed the senator again, asking if he still considers Harris to be ”progressive.
During the rare occurrences in which she has actually talked about the policies she’d pursue as president, Kamala Harris has sounded anything but moderate. In fact, her plan to enact price controls on groceries, seize the property of the wealthy, gun confiscation, and pack the Supreme Court all align closer to Hugo Chavez than Bill Clinton.
Harris’ proposals have so far been too radical for even some of her staunchest supporters.
During the only interview to a major news outlet that she has taken, Kamala Harris failed to explain to CNN why she had had so many changes to her views from 2020 to today.
USA Today noted that The CNN interview was Harris’ first real opportunity to explain why she’d made these dramatic policy shifts on everything from health care to the climate to illegal immigration. In 2019, when Harris first ran for president, she even outranked her fellow senator and primary opponent, Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders (a democratic socialist), as the most liberal member of the Senate.
Now, apparently, she’s seen the light. We just don’t know why.
Bash asked Harris a series of questions about Harris’ supposed transformation: “How should voters look at some of the changes that you’ve made? Is it because you have more experience now and you’ve learned more about the information? Is it because you were running for president in a Democratic primary?”
Harris’ answer revealed nothing.
“I think the most important and most significant aspect of my policy perspective and decisions is my values have not changed,” she said. “You mentioned the Green New Deal. I have always believed – and I have worked on it – that the climate crisis is real, that it is an urgent matter to which we should apply metrics that include holding ourselves to deadlines around time.”
During much of the interview, Harris explained how her “values” haven’t changed.” The problem isn’t that her values haven’t changed. The problem is that no one knows what values she actually holds and her refusal to take questions only leaves Americans guessing.
Much like Obamacare, we will have to elect Kamala Harris to find out what she will do as president.
