For years, Democrats have claimed that Hunter Biden did nothing wrong and that Joe Biden was just a good, honest man who loves his country and had no idea that several members of his family were raking in millions while he served as vice president.
Now, with Nancy Pelosi having tossed aside Joe Biden for Kamala Harris in the race for the White House, the truth can be admitted.
Hunter Biden plans to plead guilty in his federal tax evasion trial, a surprising move his lawyers revealed Thursday morning just before jury selection was set to begin. “Mr. Biden intends to change his plea this morning,” his lawyer, Abbe Lowell, announced in a Los Angeles federal courtroom.
Jury selection had been scheduled to start Thursday morning, but the unexpected decision halted the process. President Biden’s son, who arrived at court with his wife Melissa Cohen, was facing his second trial in a few months, following his June conviction for illegally owning a firearm while struggling with drug addiction.
NBC News writes that the reversal was made shortly before jury selection was expected to begin in what would have been Biden’s second trial this year. The only surviving son of President Joe Biden, Hunter Biden is the first offspring of a sitting president to stand trial on criminal charges.
Shortly after the announcement, the court went into recess.
The conditions of the plea were not immediately disclosed nor whether the judge will accept his attempt to avoid a trial and move straight to sentencing.
The news came after Biden and his attorneys had a private meeting before court on Thursday with U.S. District Judge Mark C. Scarsi, who is presiding over the case.
Hunter Biden was charged in December with nine counts, including three felonies and six misdemeanors, related to allegations that he failed to pay his taxes during a time when he was reportedly struggling with drug addiction, and even after he claims to have achieved sobriety.
However, Hunter appears to have forgotten to run his plea deal by someone important: the prosecution.
The Washington Examiner reports that Leo Wise, one of the prosecutors working for special counsel David Weiss, told Judge Mark Scarsi that Biden appeared to be asking for “special terms.”
“Hunter Biden is not innocent. Hunter Biden is guilty, and he’s not allowed to plead guilty on special terms that only apply to him,” Wise said, according to a report from the courtroom.
The newspaper explained what happened, writing that the “decision by the special counsel’s team to urge Scarsi to move the case to trial comes after Biden’s legal team surprised prosecutors Thursday morning by entering what is known as an ‘Alford plea’ just before jury selection in the case was set to begin.
An Alford plea involves a defendant admitting that there is enough evidence in a case for prosecutors to secure a guilty conviction, but it allows the defendant to avoid admitting to any allegations.
In Biden’s case, it would allow the first son to avoid admitting in court that he made millions of dollars from foreign business dealings and spent the income on frivolous purchases, all while neglecting his taxes.“
The indictment alleges that Biden engaged in a four-year scheme to avoid paying at least $1.4 million in federal taxes from 2016 to 2019, specifically between January 2017 and October 2020. It also claims that he attempted to evade taxes for 2018 by filing false returns in February 2020.
According to the indictment, the money that should have been used to pay taxes was instead spent on drugs, escorts, girlfriends, luxury accommodations, exotic cars, clothing, and other personal expenses—essentially everything except his tax obligations.
Several of the witnesses who planned to testify could also lead to more charges against the president’s son. Special counsel David Weiss’ team has previously said Hunter Biden’s business associate would testify at the upcoming trial about the arrangement with the executive, Gabriel Popoviciu, an oligarch facing criminal investigation at the time in Romania.
Last month, reports showed that Hunter directly asked the United States government for help with the Ukrainian company Burisma, which paid him huge sums to sit on their board, and that the Biden Administration had hidden the information for years.
The guilty plea likely means that Joe Biden—now that he no longer has any future and has become a laughingstock within his own party—will pardon his corrupt son.
