Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer has postponed his scheduled book tour, citing security concerns following intense criticism from within his own party. His decision to support a Republican-led continuing resolution (CR) last week, which helped avert a government shutdown, has sparked outrage among progressives and party loyalists, some of whom accuse him of yielding to GOP demands.
Schumer’s decision to cancel his book tour highlights the growing instability in the political landscape. His vote in favor of the CR—an action that earned rare praise from Trump—has been widely perceived as a concession that weakened Democratic leverage. CNN analyst Van Jones described the reaction within Schumer’s party as “volcanic anger,” while Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro lamented that Schumer failed to use the potential shutdown as a bargaining tool for progressive priorities, explained Brietbart.
Meanwhile, Schumer has maintained that his vote in favor of the CR was an act of strength.
“We always knew there would be disagreements, but I felt and those who voted with me felt that as bad as the CR was, and I know a lot of members didn’t like the CR the government shutdown would be far worse,” he said during an appearance on CNN’s The Lead.
“A government shutdown gives Donald Trump, Elon Musk and DOGE almost complete power as to what to close down because they can decide what is an essential service. If they determine that SNAP kids shouldn’t get food is not essential, they can just cut it out summarily they could fire half the workers in the federal government. It would have been a far worse consequence,” he claimed.
Schumer’s fears come as Democrats, or at least their activists, have become more vocal in defending violence. Left-wing activists have escalated their opposition not only to Schumer but also to high-profile figures such as Tesla CEO Elon Musk. Recent protests have included organized demonstrations, property damage, and harassment targeting Tesla dealerships and vehicle owners.

In response, former President Donald Trump has suggested that individuals responsible for these incidents should be classified as domestic terrorists. During a White House appearance alongside Musk on Tuesday, Trump condemned what he described as targeted attacks against the billionaire and his company. “I think he’s been treated very unfairly by a very small group of people,” Trump remarked, defending Musk against criticism following his aggressive cost-cutting measures as head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
Musk’s controversial actions—including large-scale layoffs and the cancellation of billion-dollar federal contracts—have provoked strong opposition from labor unions and progressive activists, some of whom have resorted to violent protests, as they so often do.
Last week about “150 demonstrators affiliated with a progressive Jewish activist group packed into the lower level of Trump Tower Thursday to protest the arrest of Mahmoud Khalil, a Palestinian activist and former Columbia University student,” The New York Times reported.
If you have taken over Trump Tower in NYC to protest in support of Hamas, it’s a pretty good indicator that President Trump has broken your brain.

“President Trump has heralded the arrest as his administration moves to deport Mr. Khalil, a legal permanent resident of the United States who was a prominent figure in pro-Palestinian demonstrations on Columbia’s campus.
The protesters held aloft cloth banners printed in red and black lettering. One read: “Free Mahmoud, Free Palestine.” They chanted, their words reverberating against the coral marble tiling. “Fight Nazis, not students,” they repeated.
Ninety-eight of the protesters were later arrested, according to John Chell, the Police Department’s chief of department.”
