DOGE Finds Millions Of Non-Citizens Receiving Social Security, Medicare

A recent report from a federal oversight agency reveals that nearly four million non-citizens were issued Social Security Numbers (SSNs) during President Joe Biden’s administration—an increase that has sparked intensified debate over U.S. immigration policy, asylum processing, and the administration of public benefit programs.

According to figures disclosed by the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), the number of SSNs assigned to non-citizens rose sharply from just over 270,000 in 2021 to more than two million in 2024. In total, 3,920,028 SSNs were granted between 2021 and 2024, reported The Daily Wire.

Stuart Varney broke down some of the details during Tuesday morning’s broadcast of his Fox Business show, “Varney & Co.,” showing how the numbers exploded from 270,425 in Biden’s first year in office up to 2,095,247 in his last year as president.

“DOGE found that immigration gave a work authorization document to illegals just five months after they filed for asylum. That document allowed them to work while they waited to hear whether their asylum requests were being accepted or denied. So, they could work as an illegal, knowing it would take years before their case was heard,” Varney explained.

He went on to note that the Social Security documentation in question was simply sent to illegal aliens via the United States Postal Service with no added safeguards. “The immigration department mailed them a social security number. No interview. No proof of identity, just put it in the mail.”

“DOGE also discovered that 1.3 million aliens are now receiving Medicaid,” Varney continued, adding, “Millions received drivers licenses, some registered to vote, and DOGE said some actually did vote. Try and square that against Democrat claims that Musk is destroying Social Security and cutting Medicaid. He’s not destroying, he’s weeding out people who don’t qualify. Who is really guilty of misinformation in this case? It is not Elon Musk.”

Liberals have long insisted that illegal immigrants did not get Medicare or Social Security, calling Trump’s claims otherwise a “lie.”

For example, in 2024, the leftwing think tank Center For American Progress wrote, “This is another one of Trump’s numerous lies; undocumented immigrants do not receive most federal benefits, including Social Security and Medicare, and in fact, their presence improves the finances of both entitlement programs. Moreover, Donald Trump’s own tax plans threaten the two programs, pushing them toward insolvency earlier and more severe benefit cuts once insolvency is reached. Indeed, Trump’s plans would move up the expected insolvency date of Social Security from 2035 to 2033 and the expected insolvency date of Medicare from 2036 to 2030.

By law, one must “either be a U.S. citizen or lawfully present noncitizen in order to receive monthly Social Security benefits.” Similarly, Medicare benefits are only available to “U.S. citizens and qualified lawfully present immigrants age 65 and older.” In other words, undocumented immigrants—who are not lawfully present—cannot receive these benefits, even though their work strengthens these trust funds.

Evidence suggests that federal government processes are overwhelmingly effective at not improperly paying out benefits, including to undocumented immigrants. The rate of all improper payments for Social Security is less than 1 percent of total benefits paid, suggesting that there are not large numbers of undocumented immigrants wrongfully collecting benefits.”

In other words: “it isn’t happening and it’s just a rightwing conspiracy theory. Also, if it is happening, it’s good,” a common theme whenever a liberal corruption is criticized.

The watchdog agency indicated that many of these recipients had applied for asylum and subsequently received employment authorization within five months of filing. This status legally permits individuals to work in the United States while awaiting a final adjudication of their claims—a process often delayed by the substantial backlog in immigration courts.
