Federal and local authorities have charged 10 individuals—allegedly members of a North Texas Antifa cell—in connection with a violent Fourth of July assault on the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Prairieland Detention Facility. The coordinated attack, which involved tactical gear and firearms, left an Alvarado police officer wounded and prompted calls for accountability amid rising political tensions over immigration enforcement.

The suspects face charges including terrorism, aggravated assault on a public servant with a deadly weapon, and assault on a peace officer. One alleged assailant remains at large. Law enforcement officials described the assault as a calculated act of domestic terrorism. The FBI and Johnson County Sheriff’s Office led the investigation and arrests, which came just days before a separate shooting of a Border Patrol agent in McAllen, Texas—part of what officials say is a 700% year-to-date surge in attacks on ICE personnel.

Acting ICE Director Todd M. Lyons condemned the violence and credited the Alvarado Police Department with preventing further bloodshed. “No ICE employees were harmed, but the risks they face are growing,” Lyons said, citing the role of disinformation and politically motivated hostility. The Department of Homeland Security has pledged to pursue full criminal prosecution of individuals who obstruct federal immigration operations or target officers.

Texas was not the only place where ICE agents have been targeted. A 43-year-old New York man, Matthew White, has been arrested and charged federally for allegedly threatening to murder an ICE agent and his children, according to a report by Bill Melugin. The case, which unfolded in early April 2025, has sparked outrage and raised questions about judicial consistency as White was released with conditions following his first court appearance last week.

White, a resident of Jamestown, New York, is accused of posting explicit threats on social media, including the chilling statement, “I can’t wait to put a bullet into his brain, but first his children.” The threats were directed at an ICE agent and were part of a series of alarming posts, including a response to a video featuring Tom Homan, the newly appointed Border Czar under President Donald Trump’s second administration. In that post, White allegedly wrote, “Then understand if your ICE agents don’t show proof of identity and a signed warrant, we will kill them,” and further escalated his rhetoric with, “Kill them all, ICE is the new age Gestapo, stop them.”

Despite the threats. Democrats have been demanding that ICE agents no longer wear masks while at work. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, the leader of the Democrats in the House, pledged to reveal the identities of ICE agents in June. “No matter what it takes,” Jeffries said, agents attempting to shield their identities would be exposed. Detractors likened the statement to Soviet-style tactics and warned it could incite further violence.

Jeffries’ remarks have resurfaced amid broader accusations that the base of the Democratic Party is embracing radical positions, including on immigration. In some cases, Democratic leadership has seen their own family members embrace radicalism, including support for Antifa.

In 2023, Democratic House Whip Katherine Clark, who is second among the party’s House leadership, saw her daughter arrested for defacing property. In November of that year, Kamala Harris’ stepdaughter was caught fundraising for a group allegedly connected to Hamas. Only a few months later, Ilhan Omar’s daughter was seen leading “antisemitic” protests at her college.
