Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer warned Tuesday that Democrats are willing to shutdown the government in an effort to ensure that their voters do not have to show photo IDs in the upcoming election.
At the center of the dispute is the Safeguarding American Voter Eligibility Act, or SAVE Act, which House Republicans are seeking to fold into a short-term appropriations measure. The proposal would require voters to present photo identification and proof of U.S. citizenship when registering to vote in federal elections and would mandate steps to remove non-citizens from voter rolls.
Schumer, the Senate’s top Democrat, forcefully rejected the measure, likening it to some of the country’s most notorious discriminatory laws. “I have said it before, and I’ll say it again, the SAVE Act would impose Jim Crow-type laws to the entire country and is dead on arrival in the Senate,” Schumer said in a statement, a move that echoed Joe Biden’s ridiculous statements about Georgia’s election laws that eventually saw more voters head to the polls than ever before while keeping the election secure.
He warned that linking the legislation to must-pass funding would derail negotiations. “It is a poison pill that will kill any legislation that it is attached to. If House Republicans add the SAVE Act to the bipartisan appropriations package it will lead to another prolonged Trump government shutdown,” he said, according to Fox News.
The funding package, negotiated with input from Donald Trump and Senate Democrats, would extend most government operations for two weeks after lawmakers stripped out a contentious Department of Homeland Security provision. House Republicans, however, argue the talks present a rare opportunity to advance election integrity priorities.
Rep. Anna Paulina Luna, R-Fla., who is leading the effort to attach the SAVE Act, pushed back against Schumer’s characterization. In a post on Twitter, she wrote: “If you are a minority that wants a voter ID, apparently you are for racist policies according to [Schumer].”

Other House Republicans echoed the defiance. Rep. Eric Burlison, R-Mo., wrote on Twitter: “House Republicans shouldn’t let Schumer dictate the terms of government funding. If Dems want to play games, no spending package should come out of the House without the SAVE Act attached — securing American elections must be a non-negotiable.”

The push has found allies in the Senate, including Sens. Rick Scott, R-Fla., and Mike Lee, R-Utah, though the legislation faces steep odds in a chamber where 60 votes are typically required to overcome a filibuster.
The showdown coincides with renewed public debate over voter ID requirements. On CNN’s News Central, chief data analyst Harry Enten pointed to polling showing broad, bipartisan support for photo identification at the polls, explained Mediate. Surveys dating back to 2018, he said, consistently show at least 75 percent approval, with a 2025 Pew poll putting overall support at 83 percent.
Americans agree with Nicki Minaj when it comes to voter id.
83% of favor photo voter id to vote per Pew. This includes 70%+ of Democrats and Republicans, as well as 75%+ of Americans across races…. White, Black, and Latino.

“Normally, you might expect hey, there’d be a big divide by party, with Republicans really for it and Democrats really against it. But not really here,” Enten said, citing support from 95 percent of Republicans and 71 percent of Democrats.
Enten also referenced a recent Twitter post from Nicki Minaj, who questioned opposition to voter ID. “What sensible forward thinking cutting edge leading nation is having a DEBATE on whether or not there should be VOTER ID?!?!!!! Like?!?!? They’re actually fighting NOT to have ppl present ID while voting for your leaders!!!!!” she wrote. Enten concluded: “The American people are with Nicki Minaj.”

Democrats’ resistance to the SAVE Act, even in the face of polling that shows roughly four out of five Americans support some form of voter ID, reflects how the party wins elections.
Why are Democrats against the SAVE Act?
Because Kamala Harris only won states that don’t require voter ID.
It’s clear Democrats oppose voter ID because they want to cheat in our elections. pic.twitter.com/Hged3p4l9T

The party’s leaders are just being forced to say the quiet part out loud now.
