Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is being encouraged to enter the suddenly wide-open race for South Carolina’s U.S. Senate seat, potentially placing one of President Donald Trump’s most prominent economic officials at the center of a fast-moving Republican contest.
Supporters contacted Bessent on Sunday to urge him to run following the shocking and sudden death of Senator Lindsey Graham, according to people familiar with the outreach, according to Politico.
Graham died of an apparent heart attack.
The interest immediately gives South Carolina Republicans another high-profile possibility as they begin the compressed process of replacing a senator who had represented the state for more than two decades.
Bessent has not indicated that he plans to become a candidate. Those close to him say he remains focused on leading the Treasury Department, a position he had long hoped to hold. A Treasury spokesperson declined to comment.
But Bessent’s name could reshape the race even if he merely considers entering it.
The Treasury secretary is a South Carolina native who maintains homes in both Charleston and Washington. Before joining the Trump administration, he built a successful career as a financier and hedge fund manager. He has since emerged as one of the administration’s most visible advocates for its tax, trade, energy, and economic policies.
That combination of state ties, personal wealth, financial expertise, and proximity to Trump could make Bessent an immediate contender in a Republican primary likely to revolve around loyalty to the president and the ability to quickly assemble a statewide campaign.
He would also enter the race from a position unlike that of a typical Cabinet official.
Bessent has increasingly developed a political profile extending beyond the traditional boundaries of the Treasury Department. Once regarded primarily as a market-oriented technocrat, he has become a forceful defender of Trump and the administration’s broader political agenda.

A Senate campaign would nevertheless require Bessent to surrender one of the most influential positions in the federal government. As Treasury secretary, he serves as Trump’s chief economic spokesman and plays a central role in tax policy, tariffs, sanctions, financial regulation, and international economic negotiations.
Those responsibilities may ultimately prove more attractive than joining a rushed Senate campaign. But political openings of this magnitude are rare, particularly in a Republican state where the party’s eventual nominee would begin the general election with a significant advantage.
Gov. Henry McMaster is expected to appoint a temporary successor to Graham while state officials prepare for a special nominating process ahead of the November election. Graham, who had served in the Senate since 2003, died Saturday at age 71 following a sudden illness.
Several established South Carolina Republicans are already being discussed as possible candidates, including members of the state’s congressional delegation. The possibility of Bessent entering the race, however, introduces a candidate with national stature, deep financial resources, and a direct connection to the White House.
It also presents Trump with a potentially difficult choice.
A Bessent candidacy could give the president a trusted ally in the Senate for years to come. It would also force him to replace a Treasury secretary who has become deeply involved in advancing the administration’s economic program.
For now, Bessent appears inclined to remain at Treasury.
But with supporters urging him to return home and seek one of the most powerful elected offices in the country, the decision may not remain entirely his to ignore.
