By The father of a 7-year-old girl left permanently disabled after a crash involving an illegal immigrant truck driver told Democratic lawmakers Tuesday that he rejected their expressions of sympathy, accusing them of caring about his daughter only when cameras were rolling.
Marcus Coleman testified before the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Immigration Integrity, Security, and Enforcement about the June 2024 California crash that severely injured his daughter, Dalilah, who was 5 at the time.

“I reject your guys’ sympathy, to be honest with you,” Coleman said during the hearing. “There’s no way you guys are sorry. Not one of you guys have ever called me. Not one of you guys have ever reached out to me. Not when you guys have ever sat there and seen me in the hallways and said, ‘Hey, sorry about your daughter.’”
“You guys do it right here while you guys are grandstanding on top of your soapbox. This is when you guys care. Right here inside this room is the only time you guys care.”
Dalilah was riding in a vehicle traveling through a construction zone when it was struck by an 18-wheeler driven by Partap Singh, an Indian national who entered the United States illegally and later obtained a commercial driver’s license in California, explained The Daily Caller. Authorities cited Singh for speeding and failing to stop.
Dalilah suffered a traumatic brain injury and other serious injuries. She has undergone multiple surgeries, including a recent operation on her skull more than two years after the crash, and is expected to live with permanent disabilities.

Coleman, himself a professional truck driver, blamed policies that allow illegal immigrants to remain in the country and obtain licenses to operate commercial vehicles.
“My daughter doesn’t deserve this,” Coleman said. “She didn’t ask for any of this. The people that jumped the fence did though.”
“They knew exactly what they were doing,” Coleman said of migrants that illegally enter the country. “They still chose to move forward in that direction. And every day something’s happening to somebody, and it is your guys’s fault.”
The hearing examined sanctuary policies and state licensing practices amid growing scrutiny of crashes involving illegal immigrants driving commercial trucks. Other witnesses included relatives of people injured in separate crashes and a sheriff challenging a state sanctuary law.
President Donald Trump highlighted Dalilah’s case during his most recent State of the Union address and called on Congress to pass “Dalilah’s Law,” legislation that would restrict states from issuing commercial driver’s licenses to illegal immigrants. Companion bills have been introduced in the House and Senate. The White House recently went after 270 trucking schools for putting unqualified drivers on the road.
Coleman attended Tuesday’s hearing with Dalilah and told lawmakers that the consequences of the crash continue every day for his family, while the political attention comes largely during public hearings.
His message to lawmakers was simple: Sympathy after the fact is no substitute for policies that could have prevented the crash.
