Where has James Talarico gone? The Texas Democrat once pressed Republican Ken Paxton to face voters on a debate stage. Now, with Talarico sidelined from the campaign trail, President Donald Trump is turning the challenge back on him.

Trump targeted the Democratic Senate nominee in a Truth Social post late Wednesday, calling him “MISSING IN ACTION” and demanding that he debate Paxton. Talarico’s campaign says he is recovering from the flu, according to Mediaite.

“Ladies and Gentlemen, upon information and belief, James TalaFREAKo, who is running for the United States Senate in Texas, is MISSING IN ACTION! No one has seen him for an extended period of time. Where is he? What is wrong with him? Bad rumors are coming out,” Trump wrote.

Talarico, 37, last appeared on the campaign trail Sept. 26, according to reporting on his schedule, explained Hot Air. His campaign began canceling events Sept. 30, and as of Thursday morning, no public appearances by the candidate were listed before Election Day. An empty public schedule does not establish that he intends to remain off the trail, but the interruption comes as candidates enter the final month of the race.

Talarico’s absence has fueled speculation on X, where BlazeTV host Sara Gonzales suggested she had information that could derail his Senate bid while acknowledging she had not verified it. “I have received unverified information on James Talarico’s whereabouts. If true, it will END his campaign,” Gonzales wrote, asking people with information to contact her. The account @jackunheard amplified her post, declaring, “Talarico’s campaign could be over TODAY.”

Another account alleged that Talarico was experiencing a mental health crisis, attributing the claim only to an unnamed source. None of the posts supplied evidence establishing those allegations, and Gonzales did not disclose what she had been told. Talarico’s campaign says he has been recovering from the flu and expects to return to the campaign trail this weekend.

Paxton’s campaign seized on the absence, shifting attention from the Republican’s earlier refusal to debate to whether his Democratic opponent would resume appearing before voters.

“James Talarico is asking Texans for their vote, but he can’t even be bothered to show up,” the campaign said.
