Democrats may be losing it again. Senator Elissa Slotkin, from Michigan, warned Tuesday that the Trump administration could manufacture a national security incident before the midterm elections to justify sending federal agents or troops to polling places. The Michigan Democrat invoked her intelligence background to describe the scenario but offered no evidence in the quoted remarks of a plan to stage such an incident.
Speaking with the Michigan Black Business Alliance at Wayne State University’s Rosa Café in Detroit, the former CIA analyst portrayed the possibility as a familiar authoritarian tactic, according to The Midwesterner. Her comments came two weeks before the Nov. 3 election, which will determine control of Congress.
“The thing I’m watching very closely as a national security person, cause it’s a standard tactic of authoritarians abroad, is like right in the last two weeks of the election, they somehow come up with a national security incident, something that only they can protect us from,” Slotkin said. “And they’ll need to send out federal law enforcement, ICE, the uniformed military, to a polling place.”

She added: “So, I’m watching that very, very closely.” Slotkin pointed to disputes over voter records and mail-in voting as reasons for her concern.
“They’ve sued for Michigan’s voter rolls, they’ve tried to taint mail-in voting saying it’s bad, it’s not to be used,” she said. “They couldn’t do that, so they tried to change post office rules of who is allowed to use a mail-in vote.”
Slotkin’s warning fits a recurring pattern among liberals, especially when they feel the election may be slipping away: casting an approaching election as a potential scene of Trump-orchestrated sabotage. In 2020, viral photographs of removed mailboxes fueled paranoid claims that the administration was dismantling postal infrastructure to suppress mail-in ballots. But PolitiFact traced one widely circulated photograph to a Wisconsin contractor that refurbished or scrapped old mailboxes, while a subsequent examination of postal records found no evidence that mailbox removals were tied to the election. Those findings undercut the mailbox conspiracy without resolving every separate dispute over Postal Service operations that year.
This year, some anti-Trump organizers have gone beyond predicting interference to discussing how an election crisis could become an opening for sweeping political change. Data analyst Jennica Pounds, known online as DataRepublican, has released recordings and documents under the title “The Democracy Files” that she says reveal planning by former government officials and activist networks to challenge federal authority after the midterms.
According to The Post Millennial, discussions involving Renew to Thrive and Renew American Democracy included proposals for constitutional transformation outside the existing framework. Danielle Reiff reportedly discussed using a crisis over the federal government’s legitimacy to pursue major structural changes. The reporting does not establish that Slotkin participated in those discussions, but it illustrates how an anticipated election confrontation has become part of some anti-Trump organizers’ planning.
Slotkin’s latest warning also follows controversy over her call for Democrats to weaponize the government against those who work in the Trump administration in an effort to dissuade young people from being conservative. At a University of Chicago event, she urged Democrats to focus on particularly egregious corruption cases and said she wanted young people considering administration jobs to weigh the potential consequences. Conservatives characterized the remarks as intimidation.
Disputes over election procedures deserve scrutiny, but they do not establish that the administration intends to fabricate a national security emergency. What they do show is a Democratic Party, which has become prone to promoting violence, becoming more and more paranoid.
That’s a bad mix.
