Senator Kevin Cramer, a Republican, is recuperating at home after suffering a serious fall over the weekend that resulted in a seizure, a brain bleed, and a concussion. The North Dakota senator shared details of the incident on social media, explaining that he slipped on ice while walking down a hill to a dock, hitting the back of his head.
Cramer, 64, said he has no memory of the fall but was diagnosed with a seizure and a brain bleed after seeking medical attention. Doctors treated a head laceration with staples and admitted him for observation. He noted experiencing “pretty bad headaches” following the accident but added that his condition has since improved.
USA Today reported that he doesn’t know when he will return to Washington because doctors told him to “rest a little longer.”
“I do not remember anything from the fall until arriving at Sanford Health emergency room” with his wife Kris, Cramer wrote.
“After seeing the emergency doctor, taking some tests, including a CT Scan, and seeing a neurologist, I was diagnosed with a severe concussion, a seizure, and a slight brain bleed,” he added. “The wound on my head wouldn’t stop oozing, so the doctor punched a couple of staples on the laceration and admitted me.”
“It will be day to day this week, but I am ready to return quickly if events require it,” he said.
Cramer revealed his health scare with a semi-graphic post on Facebook.
Photos accompanying the post show a bloody streak down a snow-covered hillside in the senator’s backyard and two staples punched into his head.
The senator, who was first elected to the Senate in 2018 and won re-election in 2024, previously served in the U.S. House of Representatives.
Politico noted that “Cramer previously suffered a serious hand injury in 2022, keeping him temporarily away from Washington.
His absence this time will leave the Senate Republican majority temporarily capped at 52 seats, which is still enough for the GOP to confirm nominees without needing help from Democrats so long as they remain mostly united.
Senate Republicans are currently awaiting to see if their House counterparts can adopt a budget resolution this week that would tee up a sweeping tax, border, energy and defense bill.”
The North Dakota senator has faced personal tragedy over the past year. His son, Ian, was sentenced to 28 years in prison for a fatal high-speed crash that killed a sheriff’s deputy. During his trial, Ian admitted to using methamphetamine and bath salts on the day of the incident in December 2023. The senator has stated that his 43-year-old son suffers from severe mental disorders, including paranoia and hallucinations.
