Ron DeSantis isn’t going to stand by and let Democrats punch Republicans in the face over and over again. Florida Republicans are advancing a new congressional redistricting proposal as part of a broader national contest over House maps ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.
On Monday, Gov. Ron DeSantis unveiled a proposed map designed to reflect Florida’s population growth and shifting political alignment, writes The Daily Caller. If enacted, the plan could expand the GOP’s advantage in the state’s U.S. House delegation, with early estimates suggesting Republicans could gain up to four additional seats. That would produce a roughly 24–3 Republican-to-Democrat split across Florida’s 27 or 28 congressional districts.

The proposal comes amid parallel redistricting efforts in other states. In Virginia, voters narrowly approved a constitutional amendment on April 21 allowing for a new congressional map that could favor Democrats. The measure passed with about 51% support and would give Democrats an advantage in 10 of the state’s 11 districts. Democrats currently hold six House seats in Virginia, compared to five for Republicans. A lower court has raised questions about the map’s constitutionality, and the Supreme Court of Virginia heard arguments on the issue earlier this week.
DeSantis characterized Florida’s effort as a corrective measure tied to the aftermath of the 2020 census and subsequent demographic changes.
“Florida got shortchanged in the 2020 Census, and we’ve been fighting for fair representation ever since,” DeSantis said in comments to Fox News. “Our population has since grown dramatically, and we have moved from a Democrat majority to a 1.5 million Republican advantage. Drawing maps based on race, which is reflected in our current congressional districts, is unconstitutional and should be prohibited. Our new map for 2026 makes good on my promise to conduct mid-decade redistricting, and it more fairly represents the makeup of Florida today.”

Florida has experienced a notable political shift in recent years, with registered Republicans now outnumbering Democrats by more than one million voters.
The move is part of a wider push by both parties to revisit congressional boundaries outside the traditional post-census cycle. On Monday, the Supreme Court of the United States upheld a Texas congressional map expected to yield Republicans five additional House seats. In California, voters approved Proposition 50, authorizing the Democratic-controlled legislature to redraw congressional districts in ways that could strengthen Democratic representation.
DeSantis has called a special legislative session for lawmakers to consider the Florida proposal. Specific district boundaries have not yet been fully released, and legal challenges from Democrats are widely expected.
Even The National Review has praised the Florida governor’s willingness to fight back.

The competing efforts underscore an intensifying partisan struggle over redistricting nationwide, as both parties seek to shape the electoral map ahead of 2026. With the U.S. House narrowly divided, even modest gains in a handful of states could prove decisive.
