It has become a strange obsession on the political left: the push to erase longstanding boundaries between men’s and women’s spaces.
Democratic Sen. Tammy Duckworth of Illinois reignited the debate Sunday after posting a Pride Month photo wearing a shirt that read: “YOU CAN PEE NEXT TO ME.”

Duckworth, a combat veteran and double amputee who lost both legs while serving as an Army National Guard Black Hawk helicopter pilot in Iraq, appeared smiling and waving in the photo. A rainbow progress pride flag stripe appeared beneath the message on her black T-shirt.
She captioned the post: “Happy Pride!” alongside rainbow and transgender pride flags.
She’s considered to be a “moderate” in the party.
The image quickly circulated on Twitter, where the Daily Caller shared it with the headline: “Democrat senator posts photo showing her support for biological men in women’s bathrooms.”

The post drew tens of thousands of views and hundreds of replies, with critics raising concerns about privacy and safety for women and girls in restrooms, locker rooms and other shared facilities.
Duckworth’s post was not an isolated gesture. Transgender issues have become a recurring priority for Democratic leaders, even as the party has struggled to convince voters that its positions reflect the concerns of ordinary Americans. In 2024, President Joe Biden drew backlash after issuing a Transgender Day of Visibility proclamation on Easter Sunday, when the two observances fell on the same date.
Former Vice President Kamala Harris, who remains one of the early frontrunners for the 2028 Democratic nomination, also faced intense criticism during the 2024 campaign over her previous support for taxpayer-funded gender-transition surgeries for prisoners and migrants in federal custody. Republicans turned the issue into one of their most effective attacks of the election with an ad declaring: “Kamala is for they/them, President Trump is for you.”
Minnesota Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan, who is now running for the U.S. Senate, has also drawn criticism for her messaging on transgender issues. Flanagan previously appeared in a shirt reading “Protect Trans Kids” alongside the image of a large knife, a design critics viewed as threatening toward anyone who opposed medical transitions for minors. The episode resurfaced amid broader scrutiny of Flanagan after she appeared in a hijab during a visit with Minnesota’s Somali community.
I do think it’s notable that this is the Lieutenant Governor of Minnesota and her choice of messaging. https://t.co/nLvDeZrzZM pic.twitter.com/MadR9XRary

Yet Democratic politicians have shown little appetite for leaving the issue behind. Maryland Gov. Wes Moore, another potential 2028 contender, recently reopened the debate over gender transitions for minors after being pressed on whether he would support a child who wanted to transition. Duckworth’s Pride Month post offered the latest indication that the party remains committed to engaging on a cultural issue that has repeatedly exposed a wide divide between progressive activists and everyone else.
