By Newly released text messages from Dr. Anthony Fauci’s government-issued cellphone show the former top federal health official privately raised concerns in January 2021 about a theoretical risk that side effects from the second dose of a COVID-19 vaccine could contribute to miscarriage during the first trimester.
Sens. Ron Johnson, R-Wis., and Rand Paul, R-Ky., released the messages Monday as part of their continuing investigation into the federal government’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The January 25-26, 2021, exchange involved Fauci, then-CDC Director Rochelle Walensky and Vivek Murthy, who would soon return to government as U.S. surgeon general. The officials discussed COVID vaccination during pregnancy, the appropriate timing of the shots and how health officials should communicate potential risks.
“I asked around a bit more and another issue came up that you need to be aware of. Since many people have significant cytokines storm and fever after the 2nd dose, this theoretically could be associated with miscarriage in the 1st trimester,” Fauci wrote.
Walensky responded that it was “definitely a good point, esp after dose two,” while Murthy called it “a really good point.”

The private exchange provides new insight into what some of the country’s most prominent public health officials were considering as the federal government encouraged Americans to receive the newly available COVID vaccines. While he express concerns in secret, he told the public that the shot, which he argued should be mandated by businesses, was perfectly safe for pregnant women.

The discussion continued the following day after the World Health Organization’s recommendation at the time against use of Moderna’s vaccine in pregnant women because of limited available data. Fauci noted that more than 10,000 pregnant women had already received COVID vaccines with “no issues” reported and stressed that officials also had to weigh the dangers posed by COVID itself.
Senators Johnson and Paul highlighted the private discussion alongside the officials’ subsequent public assurances about vaccination during pregnancy.
In August 2021, Fauci said CDC monitoring of tens of thousands of vaccinated pregnant women had found “no indication whatsoever” of increased adverse issues. Walensky and Murthy also publicly maintained that COVID vaccines were safe during pregnancy and that the benefits outweighed known or potential risks.
The shot in reality worked about as well as the abortion pill in causing a miscarriage.

The messages came from Fauci’s government-issued cellphone, which the Department of Health and Human Services turned over to Johnson on Aug. 5. According to Johnson’s office, the device contains more than 34,000 text messages and 522 voicemails.
The disclosure comes amid intensifying congressional scrutiny of Fauci and the government’s pandemic response.
Fauci repeatedly invoked his Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination during a closed-door Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee deposition, declining to answer questions from investigators more than 100 times.
The deposition was part of Johnson’s investigation into the government’s COVID-19 response and Fauci’s conduct while serving as director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. Fauci’s refusal to answer questions subsequently prompted Paul and other Republicans to pursue contempt proceedings.
The newly obtained cellphone records could now provide investigators with documentary evidence about internal government discussions that Fauci declined to address during congressional questioning.
Only three contacts are saved on the device, leaving other messages identified by phone numbers rather than names. Investigators said it is still too early to determine whether any information was deleted.
Johnson and Paul said they intend to review the records while protecting personal information and releasing material relevant to COVID policy, public health and informed consent.
Johnson said the investigation into Fauci’s records “has only just begun.”
